Why DJs Are The Blankety-Blank To Bands

The entertainment industry is the fastest growing industry of all. The industry is very dynamic and changes of time have a great impact. Fashion and trends are the basic principles that fundaments the scene. Without music, this scene is not complete, regardless of the genre. It gives life to entertainment and spices it up.

Musical bands and DJs make the common music a bit lively, or change an old genre of music to a new one. The past music industry was full of music bands, who had their original music. The 21st century has seen a huge reduction in the number of music bands. The reasons for this decline are many; from members quitting to DJ invasion into the industry.

The disco life

In the mid-1970s, soul, pop, funk and salsa were the most popular types of music. By then, the term DJ was unknown to many, maybe because technology had not discovered them. A surge in bands ruled the disco life, from clubs, weddings and any function that required some music. Many of them had live performances and always had the dance styles for the different genres.

How could a social event lack a live performance? It was the trend at that moment but as times have shown, it was their historic time. The 1990s saw a drastic technological advancements that had a big change in music genres and presentation. Hip-hop, reggae, soft rock and music based on culture began to rule reunions, birthday party and even clubs.

DJs came into play at around this time. At first, they played in the executive clubs while weddings, receptions, and reunions were left for the bands. Most of the bands embraced the idea of a DJ since they could increase their popularity. For instance, they would be performing on one end of the town and the DJ is playing their songs on the other side. This was a win-win game for both of the teams. How long was this relationship to be of mutual benefits?

The rivalry between the DJ and Bands

As technology advanced, the DJ could now access any music from the bands through the internet. This could be, in many cases, out of the copyright owners’ consent. The bands started losing fans and cover while the DJs ruled the world. Imagine hosting a band of ten people in a birthday party or a small reunion. If they are to have a live performance, where will they keep their instruments?

With such questions, the DJ, despite him lacking his/her original music, he can play all types of music. For bands, they are mainly specific on a few genres, if not one. What if they realize the music they are playing in a reception does not suit the congregation? A DJ has an option to change between the music genres to suit the crowd. He can add up some spice by playing around with the disc effects, which the band cannot.

The bands have always accused the DJs of reaping where they have not planted. Although they promote the bands’ music, they have a diverse collection to choose from compared to the bands. However, both of them have to rely on each other to succeed. The band gives the content while the DJ markets their music.

Things You Might Consider Prior To Starting a DJ Company

So you want to make the leap to entrepreneurship? Congratulations on your new move. But before you announce to the world that your DJ company is ready to provide quality services to all of your customers, there are a few things you need to consider. How will you find clients? How will you grow your business? Although there are many paths to business success, you might still face some challenges along the way. So before you jump into entrepreneurship with both feet, here are the things you might want to consider prior to starting a DJ company:

1. The kind of DJ you would like to become

Most people starting out in the industry don’t know that there are many types of DJs. The kind of DJ you choose to become will determine the amount of money you need to spend and the type of equipment you need to buy. You can decide to be the kind of DJ who offers their services in clubs and pubs or you can perform at parties, weddings, graduations and other events. You may also want to be a mobile DJ so you can offer your services at various entertainment venues.

2. The availability of market for your DJ service

The sort of DJ you choose to become will not only influence your budget and your equipment; it will also determine how successful you become. You need to make sure there is a market for the kind of DJ business that you are planning to set up in your community. No matter how good your business idea is, you still need a market for your services. Do your homework to ensure there is enough demand for DJs in your community before you proceed. Understanding who your clients are can help you create a business plan that will suit their needs.

3. Your Budget

Another thing you need to keep in mind is the amount of money you will need to set up your own DJ company. Most of the money you need is for buying DJ equipment and promoting your services once you get started. Make sure you take stock of everything you already have, and then consider what DJ equipment you still need to buy. You should do your research, set a budget and then find the right equipment for your needs.

4. Financing Your Business

Another factor you need to consider when setting up a new DJ company is how you will finance and grow your business. You can buy all the right pieces of equipment from a reputable store, but when it comes to funding your business growth, you need to have a proper business plan before you make the jump to entrepreneurship. You can get additional finances from traditional financial institutions, friends or family members, but you will still need a proper plan for each of these options.

5. Business Licenses & Permits

Check with state and local authorities to determine which business licenses and permits you are going to need to set up your business. In most cases, you may also need to buy liability insurance to safeguard your investment.

Now that you know the things you might consider prior to starting a DJ company, it’s off to the races! Keep in mind why you started this kind of business and what you need to do to succeed. If you are truly passionate about DJing, you will reap the rewards in no time.
